In the first world war corporal Adolf Hitler was awarded two Iron Crosses- a rare honour for a any soldier, almost unheard of for one of so low a rank#Hitler is known to have spent hours at a time in front of the mirror rehearsing expressions and gestures for his public speeches#Hitler was a failed artist. For several years he earned a precarious living selling paintings, postcards and designing artwork for advertisements#In 1944 a group of German officers came within a whisker of assassinating Hitler. They planted a bomb in a room where Hitler was holding a meeting, but the Fuhrer miraculously survived the blast unharmed#Hitler was a strict vegetarian who neither smoked nor drank#Hitler married his mistress, Eva Braun, just as the Russians were closing in on Berlin in April 1945. The following day they both committed suicide#The swastika, the bent-armed Nazi cross, was not invented by Hitler or his regime. It is in fact a very ancient Sanskrit symbol of well-being#Hitler remarked that "A great mass of people will fall more easily for a big lie than to a small one"#Hitler made little impression at school. His performance was mediocre at best. He left school failing to gain the usual certificate of education
